What might have been

I've been working on plenty of hush-hush stuff, so I'm digging back for a rejected Lex Luthor design for our DCUO piece. MechaLex! Circe digs it.

Harley does Robin!

Another concept design for our DCUO trailer. This post should assuage my pal Josh's disturbed sensibilities about the sloppy layout of the blog. Behold the quick thumbnails, the final design and a desktop image for your enjoyment. She was just a minor character in the short, and time and budget, the twin nemeses of cg, were aligned against her. Fear not- blur never gives short shrift to our characters, and her final appearance was as dastardly as one could ask for.

Our latest! I boarded this one:

Sean McNally did the design work for both- he's a freakin' art monster!

The Cimmerian Warrior from blur's Conan cinematic. He's some pal of the famous Barbarian or somethin'. ;D

Architectural studies for alien cities

I did these a couple of years ago for blur's Marvel Ultimate Alliance TV spot. Here's a rough layout for the latter, followed by various iterations on the Skrull capitol, Skrullos. As ever, budget, schedule- and in this case the length of the shot- were super-tight. My pal Tim Wallace pulled it all together into a thing of beauty- he's a modeller and scene assembler extraordinaire!

One of my old desktops, from blur's Empire Earth II cine. I'm digging back because all my recent work is under the curse of the NDA!

Space 2099

Here's some dev art for a re-visioning of the classic TV series that I never thought I'd get permission to post.

Fable III

Another blur classic! I did these thumbnails to help lay out the chicken's frantic journey.

What? I'm on Sketch Theatre?

One hour at last month's SDCC

Here's a nice scan courtesy of Lilly at Sketch Theatre- thanks!

People have commented on the two-handed drawing technique i use for the line art. I do that when tired, in a less-than-optimal posture, or want to be really accurate.

Wrack and Ruin!

More DCUO stuff-mighty Metropolis laid low by a long superhero war...

This pic almost made the poor scene assembly artist Kris Kaufman cry, but he manned he hell up and built an environment that brought me tears of joy.

Some ideas for Wonder Woman's tussle with Metallo. A ruined bank with classical columns, a truck with a Metallo-shaped dent, and Giganta's corpse as a design element. I'll stop at nothing to get a good scene!

Since these rough thumbnails were going straight into production, I overlaid notes on each pic to aid the modelers in their herculean challenge. Pow!

More? Of course there will be more!

A few more...

Explorations for a wartime Joker. We do these quick studies as a regular practice here at blur- it's fun! This job was huge- Sean McNally stepped in to do the final design, which made my craptastic sketch look awesome.

Likewise, some variations on Circe- I basically overlaid the in-game design over Terry Dodson's beautiful take on the sorceress. We opted for a classical Greek hairstyle- the technical challenge of free-flowing hair and that nutty Kirby-esque head-dress would have blown the render farm!

Here's the final- I'm not too crazy about it! A note about the backgrounds- they're based on photos treated with a cheesy Photoshop filter and painted over to try to make them original in the short time allotted to the task. Don't hate!

DC- Who do you trust?

Blur's tireless crew really sweated for this one- and it was worth it! I did a bunch of concept work- enjoy!

More to come...

Sketch Theater- San Diego-Style!

My good friend Joe Kurnia snuck these snaps of me in intense concentration at the Gnomon booth Saturday afternoon. I like that robot looming in the background, and the booth babe next door was, well, kinda distracting! I'll forgive the Gnomon peeps for the misspelling..

ComicCon 2010

Wow- all I can say is this year's con was a knockout! Blur premiered both a fabulous Goon test and our DC Universe Online Intro to massive positive response. I was busy at my table in Artists Alley all weekend, save for Sunday mrning when my wife Marc spelled me so I could cruise the show. I had tears in my eyes as the entire DC booth stopped to watch the intro Sunday morning, all silent save for one hyper-charged fan- hundreds of fans applauded and cheered. Awesome!

I didn't accept commissions, but kept busy drawing for fun- and sheer inspiration beamed into my brain by the maelstrom of creativity I was sunken in- here's a pic of my soldier girl Panza and a WIP of a character I've dubbed Sargeant Twinn Fifity...

I was honored to be asked to participate in Gnomon Studio's Sketch Theater, and I did my damnedest to kick some ass. I'll post more when it pops up o the site.

It was an amazing experience, but I'm glad to be home-

Cybertron at war!

The Autobots establish a defensive stronghold against the furious tide of the Decepticon assault. I worked up this painting over a cg render here at blur.

Terminator!

Wow- my very own blog! My pal Joshua Shaw made it to force me into 2010- that b@st@rd! Many thanks, Josh.

Here's a rough layout for a scene in blur studio's Terminator Salvation video game intro. I also storyboarded the piece- I'll be posting those boards soon. I'll also be giving a presentation on boarding and concepting at ComicCon in San Diego- look for me in Artist's Alley. See you there!

Cheers!
